Acute and Chronic Disorders of the Shoulder
The shoulder is one of the most-used moving joints of our body. It comprises many layers, like bones, tendons, ligaments, joints, muscles, rotator cuff, and bursa. Due to its excessive usage, it is more prone to injuries and is considered unstable. Also, the ball of the upper arm is larger than the socket, making it vulnerable to fractures.
Some of the disorders that affect your shoulder
Here are some common shoulder disorders:
Dislocation
A dislocation occurs when the ball is separated from the shoulder socket. This may happen due to sudden heavy force on the shoulder or due to a fall.
Tendinosis
Tendons are the tissues that connect the muscles to the bones. In some cases, the tendons become worn out and inflamed due to pressure from surrounding structures. This may be a mild condition or involve damage to the rotator cuff.
Frozen shoulder
This painful condition is caused due to an injury to the shoulder. Pain is severe and it restricts movement of the shoulders. Synovial fluid that helps easy shoulder movement is also absent in this case.
Fracture
Shoulder fracture may occur due to the impact of any injury. It may be a partial or total crack or break of the shoulder bones.
Separation
When the ligaments attached to the clavicle are torn away from the shoulder scapula, the acromioclavicular joint gets separated. It may be caused due to a fall or sudden blow to the shoulder.
Bursitis
The bursa sacs are known to protect the shoulder. Tendonitis and impingement syndrome of the shoulder cause inflammation of the bursa sacs, leading to bursitis.
Impingement syndrome
When excessive squeezing of the rotator cuff and shoulder blade happens, it leads to impingement syndrome. This condition can also lead to the tearing of the rotator cuff.
Sprain and strain
A stretched or torn muscle or tendon results in strain. It may be due to sudden impact or over time with wear and tear. It is accompanied by pain, swelling, and muscle spasms.
A sprain occurs when there is a stretched or torn ligament. Pain, swelling, and difficulty in movement are indications of sprain.
Rotator cuff tear
Due to overuse, ageing, or a sudden fall, rotator cuff tendons become inflamed. This results in rotator cuff tears.
Signs of shoulder disorder
- Stiffness in the shoulder joint
- Inability to move the shoulder joint freely
- Feeling that the shoulder would pop out of the socket
- Lack of strength in the shoulders to carry out regular activities
- Consistent, strong pain
- Inability to lift objects that you could otherwise easily carry before
Diagnosis and treatment
When you have the symptoms listed above, you should visit shoulder specialist, who can properly guide you on further treatment.
A physical examination is conducted, and the reasons for your pain are ascertained by the specialist. The doctor may also prescribe imaging tests like X-rays, ultrasound, or MRI to identify if there is any tear or breakage of the ligaments/tendons.
After ascertaining the causes of your shoulder condition, you may be prescribed medications, rest, surgery, physical therapy, or activity modification.
