Types and Treatment of Shoulder Ligament Injuries (Part 2)
The shoulder is a complicated mobile joint that depends on the ligaments for maintaining stability. Shoulder ligament injuries result from overuse, degeneration, and any traumatic events, thereby resulting in pain, limited movement, and instability.
Shoulder ligament injuries are the injuries that occur in the strong elastic tissues that are present in and around your shoulder, connecting bones and helping in stabilizing the joint. The shoulder ligaments are joined to the end of the scapula, clavicle, and humerus bones, thereby forming the shoulder complex. The excessive stretching of those ligaments due of injuries results in the shoulder joint becoming unstable.
Common Types of Shoulder Ligament Injuries and Their Treatment Options
Acromioclavicular joint sprain
The acromioclavicular (AC) joint is where the acromion meets the clavicle. AC joint sprain occurs when you fall down or suffer a direct blow to your shoulder. Treatment of this kind of injury mainly involves resting, applying ice, and physical therapies. Some cases require using a shoulder brace, and severe cases may need surgical treatment.
Glenohumeral ligament injury
The glenohumeral ligament (GHL) is responsible for stabilizing the ball and socket joint of the shoulder. But with overuse or any trauma can result in GHL injuries. Treatment mainly involves anti-inflammatory medicines, ample rest, and physical therapy.
Shoulder separation
Shoulder separation is a common injury that occurs when shoulder ligaments present between the collarbone and the shoulder blade are torn. This can happen when you fall on your shoulder, get injuries from sports activity, accidents, etc. With these ligaments tearing, the joint that connects the collarbone and the shoulder blade becomes loose, allowing them to move away from each other. Treatment includes physical therapy and pain-reducing medicines. Severe cases may need surgical intervention.
Coracoclavicular ligament injury
The coracoclavicular ligament joins the coracoid and clavicle, which is the main part of the shoulder blade. It gets injured because of any high-impact sports activities or trauma because of other reasons.
Treatment mainly involves resting, immobilization by using a sling, and physical therapy. Severe cases will require surgical treatment.
Shoulder ligament tear
It is an injury of the soft tissues that causes obstruction in the stability of the joint and the range of motion. These tears can occur in the tendons, muscles, or even the labrum, and they can be partial or severe.
Doctors even give recommendations for conservative treatments like rest, physical therapy, and ice. A few weeks are needed to fully recover from the shoulder ligament tear. Severe cases might require surgery.
Conclusion
It is true that shoulder ligament injuries are challenging, but with proper diagnosis, the right treatment, and physical therapy, a lot of individuals can quickly gain their strength, confidence, and mobility in their day-to-day life. What’s key is seeking timely medical attention and adhering strictly to the recommended treatment plan. Shoulder ligament injuries should not be a lifelong issue; a suitable approach to healing can make way for a bright and painless future.
