Shoulder Sprain: When to heat and when to ice?

A shoulder sprain refers to the condition when there is a tear in the shoulder ligament. As the ligament is the main connection between a bone and a muscle, most patients experience immense pain or numbness in the affected area. Patients may also experience redness and inflammation due to fluid accumulation in the affected area.

What causes shoulder sprain, and what are its symptoms?

Common causes of shoulder sprains include sudden movements and jerks, falls, sports injuries, car accidents, and lifting heavy objects. It may also be associated with chronic conditions such as improper body posture, as it negatively impacts the muscles and related ligaments.

Symptoms of a shoulder sprain may include:

  • Pain: The most common symptom of a shoulder sprain is pain, which may be mild or severe depending on the extent of the injury.
  • Swelling: Swelling and inflammation around the shoulder joint are also common symptoms of a shoulder sprain.
  • Limited range of motion: The shoulder joint may feel stiff or difficult to move, especially when trying to lift or rotate the arm.
  • Bruising: In some cases, a shoulder sprain may cause bruising around the joint.
  • Weakness: The injured shoulder may feel weak or unstable, making it difficult to perform certain activities.

When to use heat to treat shoulder sprain?

Heat therapy is a popularly used treatment modality in case of chronic conditions. After the initial acute phase has passed, typically after 72 hours, heat can be used to help promote healing and relieve pain. Heat works by increasing blood flow to the affected area, which can help relax tight muscles and reduce pain. It is important to remember that heat therapy must be avoided in the initial phase, as it may increase the symptoms.

When to use ice to treat shoulder sprain?

Ice should be used immediately after a shoulder sprain and during the first 24 to 72 hours to reduce swelling, inflammation, and pain. Cold therapy helps in constricting blood vessels. This further reduces the amount of blood flow to the affected area, which can help reduce swelling and inflammation. It can also help numb the area and reduce pain. The patient can use a cold ice pack 2 to 3 times a day. It is important to at least apply for 10 to 15 minutes for more effectiveness.

In conclusion, heat therapy is advised in chronic conditions as it helps in boosting blood circulation and flow. However, it must be avoided in case the patient has inflammation as it may aggravate the condition. On the other hand, cold therapy can be used in acute cases or when the patient has inflammation.
