Sports Trauma

Sports Trauma

Exercise and sports are excellent lifestyle choices to maintain physical strength and overall good health. However, injuries are common in sports activities, which can be acute or chronic in process. Unlike chronic sports injuries, which develop slowly because of repeated use of muscles and joints, acute or traumatic injuries occur because of accidents. For example, direct trauma can result in sudden and acute injuries like a sprained ankle, which occur when somebody awkwardly lands after jumping.

Even if any body part can get injured at the time of physical activities, sports trauma mainly refers to muscular-skeletal injuries that affect bones, tendons, joints, connective tissues, and cartilage. Here are a few injuries arising because of sports trauma:

  • Muscle and strains
  • Tears and sprains of ligament
  • Tendon tears
  •  Fractures in bone
  •  Dislocations of the joint

Sports trauma injuries result in pain and several other symptoms that cause restricted activities like swelling, spasms, tingling sensation, and joint instabilities. It is vital to look for medical attention if such symptoms occur after any sports-related accident, even though there is mild discomfort. Sometimes, the damage caused by the trauma can be more severe than it may seem.

Treatment of sports trauma injuries

Treatment varies depending on the specific kind of injury. Therefore, the right diagnosis is the main step for finding the most effective treatment. No matter the kind of injury, it is imperative to address the inflammation associated first. Even if inflammation is the natural response of the body to any kind of traumatic injury, it sometimes limits motion, results in inactivity, and may delay healing. To decrease inflammation and allow healing, a lot of physicians recommend the PRICE therapy, which is explained as follows:

  • P – Protection of the area that is injured using a splint or any other supportive devices
  • R – Proper rest
  • I – Application of ice for about 10–15 minutes
  • C – Compression of the injured part using an elastic bandage
  •  E – Elevation of the injured part

If required, pain relievers and anti-inflammatory drugs are also given by the physician.

Preventing sports trauma

Right conditioning

A right conditioning program assists in building strength, endurance, and flexibility, thereby decreasing the injury risk.

Good equipment

It’s important to make sure that athletes have access to the right gear and equipment that have been designed for the required sport. It helps in mitigation of any falls or collisions.

Proper training

A sports coach should emphasize giving the right training to decrease the stress on muscles and joints, thereby decreasing the chance of overuse injuries.

Adequate rest

It is necessary to take the required amount of rest in between the training sessions as it helps the body recover, prohibiting burnout and other overuse injuries.

An athlete’s resilience

Sports trauma is one of the indisputable traits of athletic pursuits, but an athlete’s resilience can shine through while they are on their pathway to recovery. By properly addressing all physical, preventive, a as well as psychological aspects, an athlete can easily come out as strong as before with the right understanding of their bodies and commitment to wellness.

Conclusion

Sports trauma is definitely an unwelcome association in sports, but with proper support and plan, it’s easy to convert this difficulty into a stepping stone to success.
